4^th Grade Self-Portraits

4^th graders started the school year in art by creating a descriptive self-portrait. They began by painting a watercolor background to show value, which is the lightness or darkness of a color.  They had to show that they could take one color and make it lighter in value and darker in value. They then had their photo taken in an interesting pose that represented themselves and added it to their painting. Then 4^th graders brainstormed words that described them. They thought about their personality, things they liked, how they looked and things that made them who they are. They decorated around their portrait with the words thinking about making different size letters and different font types. They also used a variety of lines to create an interesting design. They changed line weights (thick to thin), line types (zig-zag, wavy, straight) and patterns.

3rd Grade Picasso Self-Portraits

The 3^rd grade students learned about the artist Pablo Picasso through a power point.  They learned that Picasso was born in Spain and has become one of the world’s most famous artists.  The students were able to see the progression of his different styles of art.  The Blue Period was a time that was depressing and sad for Picasso.  He showed this through painting his artwork in all different shades of blue.  His next period was called the Rose Period.   He used more bright and cheerful colors and this was a more happy time in Picasso’s life.  The period that Picasso is most famous for is CUBISM.  Cubism is using various shapes to create an artwork showing multiple viewpoints at the same time.  This makes it ABSTRACT, or art inspired by something from real life but it is made to look different than in real life. Picasso loved to use people as his subject matter so the 3^rd graders drew a self-portrait and by using various lines, shapes and colors they made it an abstract artwork.

2nd Grade Self-Portraits

2nd Grade Self-Portraits

For their first art project of the school year 2nd graders created a self-portrait project. They started their art project by using oil pastels to create lines, shapes and patterns on their paper. When they were done with drawing they used watercolors and glitter paints to paint all over their art. When they were done with their painting they brainstormed and wrote “I am” statements and statements about what they like and don’t like. While they were working they had their photograph taken in any interesting way they wanted to show their personality. They finished by carefully writing and gluing their statements and photo on their painting.

In art class 1^st Graders reviewed that a self-portrait is art about themselves.  They remembered that one way to create a self-portrait is by drawing. As they worked on their self-portrait they remembered how to look for shapes in things that they are drawing.  They looked for circles, ovals, rectangles, squares, and other shapes.  By putting different shapes together they can draw a person and a person’s clothes.  Along with shapes they also looked carefully for details.  They collaged tissue paper for a background and glued their self-portrait to their collaged paper. Then they came up with things about themselves. They had to think about things they like, love, don’t like, who they are and what they want to be.  They used these ideas about themselves and wrote them all around the outsides of their self-portrait.

In art class kindergarteners learned that a self-portrait is art about themselves.  They learned one way to create a self-portrait is by drawing. As they worked on their self-portrait they learned how to look for shapes in things that they are drawing.  They looked for circles, ovals, rectangles, squares, and other shapes.  By putting different shapes together they learned they can draw a person.  Along with shapes they also looked carefully for details.  They learned that details were things like 5 fingers on each hand, ears, eyes, and even details on clothes like patterns, buttons and pockets.  Kindergartners took their time looking for shapes and details and drew and colored themselves.  While in art class kindergarteners also shared their favorite things or favorite things to play so that we could learn more about each other. Their name and favorite thing is repeated in the back of their art.
