1st Grade Imaginary Animals

In this painting project first grade students learned about the Russian artist Marc Chagall and used his artwork as inspiration to create their own imaginary animal.  Students learned that Marc Chagall used his memories of his childhood and images from his dreams to come up with a magical, beautiful and sometimes mysterious art.  He grew up listening to Russian folk tales and fairy tales in which animals were human like and enjoyed making made-up animals in his art. Chagall was a great dreamer and had an amazing imagination, mixing scenes from his dreams with those from real life.  To create their own imaginary animal the first graders brainstormed a list of interesting animals as a class.  They each had to then choose 3 animals to “mix-up” and make into their own imaginary animal.  After drawing the animals they painted their animals and then added details with oil pastels and glitter paints.
Way to use your imagination first graders!!!!

1st Grade Self-Portraits

1St Grade Self-Portraits
In art class 1st Graders reviewed that a self-portrait is art about themselves.  They remembered that one way to create a self-portrait is by drawing. As they worked on their self-portrait they remembered how to look for shapes in things that they are drawing.  They looked for circles, ovals, rectangles, squares, and other shapes.  By putting different shapes together they can draw a person and a person’s clothes.  Along with shapes they also looked carefully for details.  They collaged tissue paper for a background and glued their self-portrait to their collaged paper. Then they came up with things about themselves. They had to think about things they like, love, don’t like, who they are and what they want to be.  They used these ideas about themselves and wrote them all around the outsides of their self-portrait.

1st Grade Winter Self-Portraits

Winter Self-Portraits
In art class 1st graders learned the different between a portrait and a self-portrait. They learned that a portrait is art you make about other people and a self-portrait is art you make about yourself.  1st graders created winter self-portraits by drawing themselves thinking about showing an expression on their face.  They imagined showing themselves being cold, happy or even surprised.  They also had to draw winter clothing with interesting lines shapes and patterns.  They then used markers to trace and crayons to color their hair, faces and rosy cheeks.  Watercolors were then used to carefully paint their self-portraits. Finally white paint was used to splatter “snow”, making it look like they were in a winter storm or snow fight.

1st Grade Van Gogh Sunflower Paintings

Vincent Van Gogh
Sunflowers
1st Graders looked at several paintings by the famous artist Vincent Van Gogh and learned that he painted in the style of Impressionism.  They learned that he painted the first sunflower painting for a friend named Paul Gauguin and eventually did many paintings of sunflowers in his life. 1st graders learned the parts of a flower and then practiced drawing sunflowers. Students learned that van Gogh has his own style of thick paint and visible brush strokes.  Students practiced his style of painting on their art and practiced color mixing with thick brush strokes like van Gogh. At the end they traced their sunflowers with black oil pastels and added white spirals to show movement like van Gogh.
